TRNL20221003006 – Natural cooling solutions sought for homes to be sustainably renovated
A Dutch housing corporation, with more than 4000 social rental homes, is looking for a solution that can ensure natural cooling of homes to be renovated in the coming years. Solutions for cooling homes that do not result from an additional installation, but which already prevent overheating in the design. Long-term partners, architects, construction engineers, installation-, climate- and landscape experts are sought, with innovative and integral solutions, who can also support the realization.
Full description
For the Dutch housing corporation in the East of the Netherlands, is sustainability an important topic within the organization for many years, with “The Natural Step” as the starting point for their sustainability vision. As a result, sustainability is not limited to the energy transition, but they look for sustainable solutions in all their activities. To be sustainable for their tenants and look for sustainable relationships in collaboration.
Current situation
In the coming years, housing associations will have to make their homes more sustainable. The use of natural materials and avoiding the addition of installations are basic principles here. Natural materials and limitation of installations also ensure a better indoor climate and thus contribute to the health of the resident. In addition, limiting In recent years, many solutions have been developed to better insulate homes and to use sustainable energy. The basic principle here was always to limit the heat demand in winter.
Problem
However, due to this choice in the design, a problem has arisen in the summer, namely the house retains the heat even then. As a result, the homes become much too hot in the summer and many homes are therefore equipped with air conditioning or other cooling systems. Additional installations, however, increase the use of materials that deplete the earth and increase maintenance costs. The Dutch organization is therefore looking for solutions for cooling homes that do not result from an additional installation, but which already prevent overheating in the design.
Solutions sought
Solutions can be sought in, on and outside the home. It can mean different use of materials, different design of roof or facade or solutions from the landscape around the house.
To date, most solutions for heating homes have been devised from the installation point of view. In the coming decades, all homes in the Netherlands must move towards a sustainable energetic solution. Therefore a natural solution is needed for heating/cooling homes, to avoid installing cooling installations in every home.
It is important to realize this without depleting the earth. Circularity and use of biobased materials should be the starting points for this development.
The investments in making homes more sustainable concern large budgets of 25,000 to 75,000 euros per home. To realize the innovation for circular and biobased solutions, it is possible to make financing for pilots possible.
Partners sought
The Dutch housing corporation is looking for organizations that want to solve this problem with them and their maintenance partners. For this they are looking for long-term partners that can work together for several years to test possible solutions and to share experiences with other housing associations. They are open to innovative ideas, and also for fundamentally new approaches (TRL 1-3)
To find a solution, partners sought are architects, construction engineers, installation-, climate- and landscape experts. Partners that can come up with innovative solutions and who have an eye for integration of solutions from different directions. Think of building-related, installation-technical or environmental solutions. We are looking for participants who can also help realize this solution and who not only bring in ideas that may be far-reaching, but not realistic.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This technology request is part of an innovation challenge and is published on an open innovation platform from the 3rd of October and will close on the November 7th. If an organization does express interest in collaboration with this company before closing date, it will be guided through this open innovation platform and be introduced to the company’s experts. Mind that posts on this platform are not confidential. Next step is that the company will select the SMEs with whom they would like to cooperate in the development of the solution.
